Natural History & More

One of the Spain’s most important wetlands, the Ebro Delta, and the mountains of Els Ports.

The north-east of Spain has some splendid wildlife habitats, complimenting the rich culture of Barcelona. The River Ebro has carved an extensive valley that is a major fly-way for migrating birds and, on reaching the Mediterranean, forms a large delta that is important for breeding, migrating and wintering wildlife. Just inland of the Delta are the scenic mountains of Els Ports, with not only significant birdlife, such as vultures and other birds of prey, but an impressive flora . During our two-centre holiday, you will see the diversity of the area at a pleasant and quiet time of year.

The Delta is a rice growing area well known for its local food and our hotel here, although modern, reflects the local character and the meals provide a taste of the region’s specialities. It is situated in a small village surrounded by rice fields and marshes and a short walk from some excellent wildlife-watching spots. Our base near Els Ports is a charming hotel at Horta de San Joan, the village famous for its Picasso museum. A griffon vulture feeding station nearby provides superb views of these magnificent birds and we explore the local flora on the paths leading up to attractive limestone gorges.

Our final excursion will be to the Sebes Nature Reserve and Flix river meander where we will meet some of the conservation staff and volunteers at the excellent visitor centre, in addition to seeing the wildlife of the river valley.

It is possible to travel to Barcelona by train and to extend your stay in Barcelona (please ask us for details).
