An exciting tour of the wildest and least explored region of South Africa, together with the spectacular game of Kruger National Park.
Limpopo Province, in north eastern South Africa boasts an exciting tropical diversity, from its mountain peaks down to the vast lowveld still rich in game. This natural richness, all of it relatively unexplored, making this one of the most exciting destinations in the country.
Formerly widespread across the savannahs of Africa, the African wild dog, also known as the Cape hunting dog, has suffered the greatest range contraction of any African carnivore, with the total world population perhaps as low as 3000 individuals. A highlight of our trip will be time spent in with local conservation researchers in tracking the dogs and learning about their ongoing research. The Mapungubwe National Park protects the riverine forests. We’ll explore this timeless landscape, seeking out some of the game and bird specialities of the province as well as enjoying the local botany, especially the ancient trees lining the rivers. Ascending to the cooler heights, we will also visit the tracts of Afromontane forests of the Magoebaskloof mountains where we will look for the birds and primates of the area.
From the Limpopo we move eastwards to the famous Kruger National Park. The mixture of woodland, scrub and grassy savannah is home to a fabulous cross section of African birdlife, as well as the iconic megafauna: giraffe, elephant, zebra, lion, leopard and white rhinoceros are all at home in this, South Africa’s largest national park which promises to be a spectacular finale to this wonderful wildlife holiday.
