Chile - natural history of the road less travelled
5 - 19 Nov 2010 (15 days)

Worldwide Holidays

A unique trip to explore 'the road less travelled' - areas famous in history that are also home to rare and endangered wildlife.

This trip focuses on four of the most interesting areas of Chile yet includes places less visited and 'off the beaten track'. We will be looking at all aspects of natural history including the birds, plants, mammals, other animals and the landscapes and geology.

We will explore the natural history of the Atacama Desert near the 'valley of the moon', amidst stunning mountain scenery, salt lakes and geysers. The Salar de Atacama is one of the largest saltpans in the world, a magnet for flamingos, this being one of the few places where you can observe up to 3 species; Puna, Chilean and James's, the latter being the rarest in the world.

Patagonia is 'a must' for all those who have an interest in wildlife and want to enjoy magnificent landscapes. The temperate rain forests, volcanic slopes, glaciers and wildlife-rich coasts offer a unique combination. Guanacos, penguins, condors and albatrosses are just some of the highlights. There is even the chance of seeing a puma if very lucky. We visit southern beech forest where magellanic woodpecker, austral parakeet and other southern species can be found. Marine life around the coasts of Chiloe Island is fantastic and an optional extension to Tierra del Fuego completes the trip.

There is also time in the central, 'Mediterranean', area of Chile where we will explore the higher Andes as well as the coasts and valleys. A trip not to be missed for those new to Chile and for those returning to discover more of this unique country. In the company of our experienced local guide, we will take you to some of the most important yet less visited areas in this fascinating land.
